Cukur cesma (fountain)
It was built in 1931 in Dobracina street. A work by Simeon Rosandic. On that former fountain, on 3rd June 1862, a Turkish soldier (nizam) hit a Serbian apprentice boy, named Sava, because the boy protested when the Turk moved away his jug. A menacing group of Serbs surrounded the Turkish soldiers who happened to be there, but the dragoman (translator) of the Serbian police and terdzuman (middleman with Turkish officials) led away the Turks from this spot. However, in front of the police building the Turks killed the Serbian terdzuman and mortally wounded a policeman – Djordje Nislija. These events opened bloody clashes between Belgrade Serbs and Turks and gave the Turks a motive to bombard Belgrade on June 5, l862. In memory on those events, a monument was installed on that spot, financed through the Fund of the merchant Toma Vandjel. The monument is a sculpture of a boy.
