The park is located in the very centre of the old town. It is known as Students’park. Older citizens know it as Pancic’s park. In Turkish times their cemetery was at this spot, and was removed in the middle of the 19th century. Somewhat later at this spot was the largest and best known marketplace, removed finally in the thirties of 20th century. The first Belgrade city planner was Emilijan Josimovic considered that something “more aesthetic” than a market should be at this place, so when regulation works started i1869 he cut the market place to half of its size, and turned the other part into a park. First urban contour lines of the park date from the end of 19th century, when the monument of Josif Pancic was erected, while its definite look comes from the thirties of 20th century, when the monument of Dositej Obradovic was transfered from Kalimegdan and the present baroque fence installed.
