Knez Mihailova Street
Pedestrian zone and shopping centre – Knez Mihailova street is under official law protection as one of the oldest and most valuable city monuments’ environments. Along the street are many representative houses erected by the end of the seventies of 19th century. It is believed that at this site in Roman times was the centre of the settlement named Singidunum, while in Turkish times this part had curves streets with gardens, fountains and mosques. Bu the middle of 19th century in the upper part was prince Aleksandar Kardjordjevic’s garden . After the regulation plan of Belgrade, made by Emilijan Jovanovic, this street was constructed in short time and got its look and content. Most prominent families from the merchant and political elite start building houses along this street. In 1870 the municipality named it as Knez Mihailova Street.
